MOTC History
Founded in 2021, *Minds of The Culture* emerged at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and civil unrest, a time when 49% of Americans reported experiencing at least one symptom of depression or anxiety. Witnessing the profound need for accessible mental health support, Dr. Chanda Reynolds launched this grassroots initiative with a mission to connect Black and Brown communities with culturally competent care. She aimed to bridge the gap by creating a platform that offered free resources and direct access to Black and Brown therapists.
Dr. Reynolds began by creating viral content on Instagram and TikTok, leveraging social media to educate and destigmatize mental health conversations. This digital presence led to the development of a free mobile application that houses coping skills, self-help tools, and a comprehensive directory of Black and Brown therapists across the country. The app has become a cornerstone of *Minds of The Culture*, providing users with immediate access to culturally relevant support at no cost.
Through this work, *Minds of The Culture* has formed strategic partnerships with prominent organizations, including Elizabeth City State University, Maybelline, Footlocker Women, Walden University, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., United Negro College Fund, Fox Soul, District of Columbia Public Schools, Yale University, Capital One, Puma, and Revolt. These collaborations have amplified the reach and impact of the organization’s mission, fostering community engagement and providing critical mental health resources to thousands.
*In 2023, Dr. Reynolds received the 400 Years of African American History Award* in recognition of her transformative work with *Minds of The Culture*. This prestigious honor highlights her dedication to improving mental health outcomes in historically marginalized communities.
The organization’s initiatives include large-scale mental health fairs, which provide free screenings, educational workshops, and resource distribution in underserved areas. Additionally, *Minds of The Culture* collaborates with school districts nationwide to implement an emotional wellness curriculum for students, staff, and parents, equipping them with tools for emotional regulation and resilience.
In the media space, *Minds of The Culture* produces a mental health-based talk show in partnership with Fox Soul, airing on platforms like Tubi and Hulu. The show features candid conversations with licensed mental health professionals, entertainers, athletes, and other influential voices, fostering a culture of openness around mental health.
Through all its efforts, *Minds of The Culture* remains committed to its core mission: destigmatizing mental health, reducing the burden on local and national agencies, and empowering individuals to become self-sufficient, wellness-oriented members of their communities.
